Zebra Mussels, Quagga Mussels, Round Goby, Eurasian Ruffe, Spiny Water Flea...just some of the 183 alien species in the Great Lakes. A large number of these species were introduced into the Great Lakes through ballast water exchange from ships entering the Great Lakes system from other parts of the world. So these alien critters hitched a ride from far off distances, and were placed into an environment where they had no natural predators. As a result, these new species have aggressively made the Great Lakes home, and changed the lake's ecosystem indefinitely.

A deadly fish virus, responsible for wide spread fill kills in Lake Erie last summer, has now been identified in Lake Huron. Experts say the disease will almost certainly hit Lake Superior. Some Minnesota conservationists are calling for new rules requiring ships to treat ballast water so exotic species like the virus will be killed rather than spread through the Great Lakes.

Members and non-members of Bruce Peninsula Environment Group enjoyed a great evening of touring the Bruce Peninsula Bird Observatory in Cabot Head, led by Ron Baker, a very devoted and committed volunteer of this great site. For many of us, this site was a revealed treasure, introducing us to the marvellous science of bird watching, banding and researching the migratory flights common to this region.

Paul Martindale passes away - Feb 20 2006
Paul Martindale, our fellow BPEG Member, passed away at his residence near Lion's Head on Monday, February 20, 2006 with family by his side.
Visitation will be held at the Davidson Chapel, 71 Main Street, Lions Head on Thursday, February 23rd from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The funeral service to celebrate Paul's life will be held at Christ Church Anglican, Lions Head on Friday at 4:00 p.m.

The dirtiest job on the ship was understandably the one Jim Macdonald dreaded most. During his years as chief engineer for Canada Steamship Lines (CSL), aboard carriers including the CSL Tadoussac, Macdonald oversaw the offloading of 25,000 tons of iron ore at the Port of Hamilton on each journey. Now 70 and retired, Macdonald recalls his voyages aboard the 730-foot-long Tadoussac—how, in the late 1980s, the Tadoussac would head back to the far end of Lake Superior to pick up a fresh ore load at Thunder Bay. After a short catnap while the vessel eased through the locks of the Welland Canal, it would be time to clean out the ship. This meant dumping into the water tens of thousands of marble-sized ore pellets that didn’t make it off at port.

Bruce Peninsula Environment Group offered its second annual tour of renewable energy on June 4 with visits to six sites, including a solar domestic hot water system, small and medium wind turbines, solar thermal home heating, a wood pellet stove demonstration, a ground-source heat pump and the Ferndale wind turbine.
Bale Wrap Collection Success - Jun 18 2005
Farmers on the Northern Bruce go through an estimated 15 to 20 tons of plastic bale wrap a year and, until recently, got rid of it by taking it to a garbage dump or burning what didn’t get blown away by the wind. But now, a new company in New Hamburg is picking up the wrap and turning it into “lumber” and in the process not only saving some trees but also freeing up space in waste disposal sites and cutting down on pollution from burning plastic.

I was holding the latest map of Artificial Night Sky Brightness just published by Dr Perantonio Cinzano, Dr. Fabio Falchi ( both from the Un diversity of Padova, Italy ) and Dr. Chris Elvidge ( National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, Boulder Colorado ). I have known for many years how fortunate my wife and I are to live and work on the Bruce Peninsula and now I was given one more reason to be thankful. Beautiful, transparent nighttime skies with a minimum of light pollution! .. and now this Atlas confirms it !
