HISTORY

The Bruce Peninsula Environment Group (BPEG), a non-profit organization, was founded in 1989 by Lynda Hoita, Ziggy Kleinau (also a steering member of Great Lakes United and Citizens for Renewable Energy) and others who were concerned about the impact of modern day development on the fragile environment of the Peninsula.
They were prepared to invest their time and resources to foster a greater awareness of this natural treasure. When Lynda became ill she was forced to leave to others the work she initiated. Lynda passed away but her legacy lives on through the organization she founded and with an annual environmental award presented to two local students each year.

Members have been active

  • in establishing recycling,
  • in road cleanups,
  • in large environmental events,
  • in establishing sustainable forestry
  • in reducing cosmentic pesticides
  • in the dark sky movement

Throughout the years interesting and informative speakers have been hosted by BPEG at monthly meetings and at special events, attracting both permanent residents and visitors to come and learn about this very special place.
